Prof Surendra Singh Memorial Lecture

 
Title - Policy Paralysis in Correctional Administration in India.

Prof. Surendra Singh was former Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Varanasi and former Pro Vice chancellor and Head of Department of Social Work, University of Lucknow. Prof Singh had passed B.A in 1962 and M.S.W.in 1964 with 1st division. He was appointed as Lecturer in 1964, Reader in 1978 and Professor in 1985.

During his service, he continued his pursuit of education and acquired LL.B., Ph.D. and D.Litt. degrees from University of Lucknow itself. Diploma of N.D.Sc., M.D. in Alternative Medicine and D.Litt. were obtained from various other institutions. He held almost all administrative positions in University system. He actively participated in Co-curricular and Extra-curricular activities of the University as Programme Officer and Programme Coordinator of the National Service Scheme and Director of Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension scheme of Government of India. He started the Contemporary Social Work, a renowned journal in the field of social work. During his tenure as Head, the department has obtained the status of DSA (Department with Special Assistance) and later on Center for Advanced Studies. He was appointed as Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Varanasi in 2003. After the completion of his as Vice Chancellor in 2006, he returned back to Lucknow University and finally retired as Professor of Social Work on 30th June, 2006. He was the President of ASSWI and founder President of NAPSWI. In his 42 years long brilliant career, he has published 20 books, 200 research papers in national and international journals of repute, guided 60 scholars for their PhD degrees and conducted more than three dozen research projects for government and other organisation. .

Social work fraternity shall always remember him and feel inspired by Prof Surendra Singh as an excellent teacher, efficient leader, powerful motivator and fine human being.
